When people search for “NSFW AI chat app,” they usually mean one of two things: a chatbot that will write explicit roleplay without cutting the conversation short, or a companion app where mature content is at least an option rather than a wall. The two overlap, but they’re not the same product, and most comparison lists blur them together.

Here’s the thing almost none of those lists mention: many of the apps they recommend aren’t on the Google Play Store, and the ones that are ship with adult content switched off. For each app, we looked at five things:

Where it actually runs. Google Play, Apple App Store, browser only, PWA, or sideloaded APK.
What the provider’s own policy says about adult content. Not what a review site guesses, what the company itself states.
Age gating. Whether there’s any stated verification beyond a self-reported checkbox.
What the free tier lets you do. Chat only, or also image generation, custom characters, memory.
Whether you can make and share your own characters, and the platform’s track record on safety and privacy incidents.

A few ground rules for this article: there are no affiliate links anywhere in it, and nobody paid for a placement. Every factual claim links to its source. Where a price is quoted, we found it on the provider’s own pricing or FAQ page; where we couldn’t confirm a number that way, we say “check their pricing page” instead of repeating a number from a third-party aggregator that might already be stale.

Character.AI is one of the biggest character-chat platforms around, built by former Google researchers and available on web, Android, and iOS (Wikipedia). It doesn’t allow NSFW content. The company runs content filters and, following lawsuits over teen users, added a more restrictive mode for under-18 accounts rather than opening things up (CNN). It’s built for broad, general-purpose character roleplay, not adult content, and people who came for the latter tend to leave once they hit the filter.

Replika

Where MaiFriends stands

MaiFriends is not on this list as a winner, and it wouldn’t be honest to present it as one. It’s an Android app on Google Play, rated 18+, and because it ships through Play, it works within Play’s rules rather than around them, which means it is not an uncensored app. Characters have a backstory, a nationality, a job, and a way of talking, and the app tracks which characters get chosen most, showing rankings based on that. The free tier gives you 25 swipes a day; messages themselves aren’t counted or limited. You earn hearts by watching ads (one to three hearts per ad) and through a daily streak. What can go wrong

This category has a real track record worth knowing about before you sign up anywhere.

Muah.ai, September–October 2024. A data breach exposed roughly 1.9 million email addresses along with chat and image prompts, some of which were reported to include extremely troubling content. It was first reported by 404 Media and confirmed via Have I Been Pwned (Malwarebytes, Have I Been Pwned).

Replika, February 2023. Italy’s data protection authority forced Replika to stop processing user data for erotic roleplay over concerns about age verification and risk to minors. The feature returned in March for pre-existing users only (Vice).

Character.AI, 2024–2026. The company faced multiple lawsuits over interactions with teenage users, including a wrongful-death suit filed in Florida in October 2024. Character.AI and Google reached a settlement in January 2026 (CNN).

Before you pay for any of these apps, check four things: what the provider’s own policy actually says (not a review site’s summary), whether age verification is more than a checkbox, what happens to your data if the company is breached or shuts down, and whether pricing is stated clearly on an official page rather than buried behind a “loading” screen.
